How To Make Firecrackers 🧨

Packed with bold ranch seasoning and a fiery kick of red pepper, these firecrackers are the kind of snack that always gets rave reviews at potlucks, parties, and casual get-togethers. It’s incredibly beginner-friendly, and I like how hands-off it is; no chopping or cooking required if you go the no-bake route, which makes it perfect for busy days or last-minute hosting. It’s also easy on the wallet, using basic pantry staples. You can adjust the heat level, try different oils, or even swap in gluten-free crackers.

Ingredients Notes

Here’s a quick overview of the key ingredients for this recipe. For the full list of ingredients and exact measurements, be sure to check the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Saltine crackers: About 4 sleeves (16 oz). You can also use mini saltines or gluten-free crackers if needed. Look for ones that are sturdy and not already broken.
  • Olive oil: I prefer a mild, light olive oil, but vegetable or canola oil works too.
  • Ranch dressing mix: I use 2 packets of the dry mix. You can use store-brand or name-brand; it all works.
  • Garlic powder:  Adds depth without needing to chop fresh garlic.Onion powder: Balances the ranch and garlic flavors.
  • Black pepper: Just enough to round out the spice.
  • Red pepper flakes: The key to that kick! Three tablespoons of red pepper flakes make it hot, but you can use less for mild and more for bold heat.

How To Make Firecrackers

I like to start by grabbing a large gallon-sized zip-top bag: less mess, and easier to shake. Add olive oil, ranch mix, and spices, then seal the bag and gently knead it to combine.

Next, toss in the saltine crackers, seal it again, and flip the bag gently so the crackers get evenly coated. I flip it several times over a few hours to help the flavor soak in.

Let the crackers sit at room temperature for 5 to 6 hours, or overnight if you have time. The longer they rest, the more flavorful they become.

To add the firecracker crisp, bake them at 250°F for about 15 minutes on a large cookie sheet. It gives them a nice toasted crunch that’s perfect for sharing.

Do I have to bake firecrackers?

Nope! You can skip the oven entirely. Just be sure to let them sit for at least 6 hours to soak in the flavor.

Can I make these ahead for a party?

Absolutely. I often prep the bag the night before and bake them just before guests arrive.

Variations, Substitutions, and Recipe Tips

Dietary Modifications: For a GF version, use gluten-free saltines or even crispy rice crackers, and look for a dairy-free ranch dressing mix for a DF option. Reduce the oil slightly if you’re watching fat content.

Flavor Enhancements: Try adding a teaspoon of smoked paprika or Cajun seasoning for a deeper Southern flavor. Want more heat? A pinch of cayenne pepper does the trick.

Add-In Options: Add mini pretzels, oyster crackers, or even Cheez-Its to the mix. Just adjust the oil amount slightly so everything gets evenly coated.

Tips for Success: Cool the crackers completely before storing to keep them crisp. If they look oily after baking, let them sit on a paper towel for a few minutes. I usually double this batch when I’m hosting a large group. One batch never seems to be enough!

Ingredients

  • 16 ounces saltine crackers, about 4 sleeves
  • 1 1/2 cups olive oil
  • 4 tablespoons ranch dressing mix, about 2 packets
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons red pepper flakes, more or less depending on how spicy you want them to be

Instructions

Prepare the spice marinade:

  • In a large gallon-sized zip-top plastic bag, add olive oil, ranch dressing mix, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and red pepper flakes.
1 1/2 cups olive oil, 4 tablespoons ranch dressing mix, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, 3 tablespoons red pepper flakes
  • Seal the bag and knead it gently to mix all ingredients together.

Add the crackers

  • Place all the saltine crackers into the bag with the oil mixture.
    16 ounces saltine crackers
  • Seal the bag and gently turn it over several times, making sure all crackers are evenly coated. Tip: The more you flip and knead the bag, the better the flavor coating. However, be very careful not to break the crackers.
  • Leave the sealed bag at room temperature for 5 to 6 hours. This helps the crackers absorb all the seasoning.

Bake the Crackers

  • Preheat oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Arrange the crackers in a single layer on a large baking sheet.
  • Bake for 15 minutes.
  • Let cool completely before serving.

Gina’s Notes and Tips

Storage and Reheating Instructions
  • Storage: Once fully cooled, store your firecrackers in an airtight container at room temperature. They’ll stay fresh and crunchy for about 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Freezer-Friendly: Yes, you can freeze them! Just let them come to room temperature before serving. They’ll keep well for up to a month in the freezer.
  • Reheating Tip: If they’ve gone a little soft, pop them back in a 250°F oven for 5 to 7 minutes to crisp them back up.
