If you wonder what is purple tea, here are your answers. Purple tea is a new variety of tea discovered that has low caffeine content and is very high in antioxidants. It also has a number of potential health benefits over green tea, such as cardiovascular benefits and reduced cholesterol levels

Purple tea comes from the camellia sinensis plant, but unlike other types of tea like green tea, black tea, and white tea, the leaves are purple. This is caused by a unique genetic mutation that produces anthocyanin, the same potent antioxidant seen in blueberries.

🌎 Where Does Purple Tea Come From?

Since it was just recently discovered, purple tea is somewhat new to the world of tea. Only a few years have passed since purple tea became commercially available, and it is still uncommon in many tea stores.

The plant from which purple tea is derived was discovered growing in the wild in the Assam region of India, where many other varieties of tea are also grown for commercial purposes. Additionally, Assam is close to the Chinese state of Yunnan, the alleged origin of tea.

Following their initial discovery, these unusual purple tea plants were transported to Kenya, where the Tea Research Foundation of Kenya set out to develop a cultivar of the wild plant that would be perfect for industrial tea production. Today, Kenya is the country that produces the most purple tea.

This unusual tea thrives when planted at high altitudes near the equator, where it gets twelve hours of sunlight every day throughout the year.

Every year, the amount of purple tea produced in Kenya increases as purple tea gains popularity and demand among both tea specialists and curious customers.

☕️ What Does Taste Like?

Although purple leaf tea has just recently entered the market, its popularity is rising as more consumers become aware of its intriguing past, flavor, and health advantages.

The flavor of Kenyan purple tea is a nice, earthy, and sweet taste. While the infusion of purple tea is light with a faint purplish tint, the tea itself is a dark color. It actually has a similar flavor profile to some other herbal teas like white tea and others.

🫖 How to Brew Purple Tea

I recently purchased JusTea PURPLE RAIN Loose Leaf Purple Tea from Amazon and brewed up a delicious batch. JusTea is organic, and their trade partnership focuses on farmer fair trade wages.

⭐️ This purple tea contains more antioxidants than Kenyan green tea with half the caffeine. Also, the wooden spoon was hand carved in Kenya and supports artisan families.

Purple tea is reasonably easy to produce, similar to other herbal infusions, and can be sipped warm to unwind after a long day or cold to battle the sweltering summer heat. It is prepared similarly to how black or green tea is.

Follow the steps below to make a hot cup of purple tea:

  1. On a burner, bring water to a boil.
  2. Place 1 heaping teaspoon of dried purple tea leaves in a tea bag or infuser. Place it into a large tea cup.
  3. Pour one cup of 190-degree hot water into the teacup.
  4. Steep for 4 minutes. *Note, that you can use the same tea leaves for a second cup. However, allow steeping for 8 minutes.
  5. If you like a stronger tea drink then. Simmer on the stovetop for 10 minutes to make a more potent mixture. Leaving it on the stove will not turn it bitter like other teas.
  6. You can drink it hot or add crushed ice for a cool, refreshing beverage.
