Black Cherry Jello for an Easy Make-Ahead Dessert

This black cherry jello recipe is a family tradition on our holiday table. It started when my mom made this sweet cherry jello for Thanksgiving while my kids were still very young. The big black cherries and thick, creamy topping quickly became a favorite with all of them.

Well, 35 years later, that tradition is still going. Now I make it for my grandkids every Easter and Thanksgiving. It is one of those recipes that has become a part of who we are as a family.

One of the best things about this holiday jello salad is I can make it the day before and keep it in the fridge until we’re ready to eat. This black cherry jello would be great for serving at potlucks, family dinners, shower tables, or anything served buffet style.

Main Ingredients

A tray with a box of black cherry Jello, a bowl of frozen dark cherries, a bowl of sugar, a package of cream cheese, and a container of sour cream arranged on a light surface.

Here’s a quick overview of the key ingredients for this recipe. For the full list of ingredients and exact measurements, jump to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Black Cherry Gelatin: Use a standard 6-ounce box so the set stays firm and sliceable after chilling.
  • Frozen Black Cherries: Cut them in half while still slightly firm, so they stay evenly spaced in the set gelatin.
  • Cream Cheese: Let it sit out until soft so it blends smoothly with no lumps in the topping.
  • Sugar: Granulated sugar blends into the cream cheese and helps it whip up light and spreadable.
  • Sour Cream: Adds a slight tang and keeps the topping soft enough to scoop over the set jello.

Helpful Ingredient Tips

  • You can swap the frozen black cherries for canned cherries or fresh cherries with the seeds removed. If you are using canned, be sure to drain off excess liquid so the gelatin stays firm. If you like cherry desserts, you might also enjoy this no-bake cherry delight with pie filling for another easy, creamy dessert.
  • The topping can be made with homemade whipped topping instead of soft cream cheese and sour cream if you want a lighter finish, or left off entirely for a fruit-only version.

How To Make Black Cherry Jello

This comes together in stages and can be made the day before.

A white mixing bowl filled with a dark red liquid, with a light blue-handled whisk resting inside, placed on a light blue textured surface.

In a large heat-resistant bowl, dissolve the black cherry gelatin in the boiling water. Mix until completely dissolved with a whisk. It will take about a minute or two. Stir in the cold water until combined.

Pour the Jell-O mixture into a 9 x 13 pan. Chill in the refrigerator for 1 hour. Set a timer so it does not chill too long before adding the cherries, then remove the pan from the refrigerator.

A white and light pink striped cutting board with halved and pitted dark red cherries scattered across it, some juice staining the board.

Cut the cherries in half.

Tip: After the first hour, the surface should look slightly thick but still soft when touched. That’s when the fruit stays in place. If the gelatin firms up too much before adding the cherries, they will sit on top instead of staying suspended.

Evenly distribute the black cherries into the Jell-O. Return the pan to the refrigerator and chill for 4 hours or overnight, until fully set.

Quick Tips and Variation Ideas

  • Chopped pecans on top add a little crunch right at the end. I only add them when I am ready to serve.
  • Chill in individual cups instead of a pan, so it sets in portioned servings. I’ve done that for gatherings. It made things easier, kind of like these no-bake creamy cheesecake cups, where everything is already ready to grab and enjoy.
  • Letting it sit overnight gives you a firmer set. That’s when it cuts clean and holds its shape best.

Hospitality with Black Cherry Jello

Set up a Backyard Spring Dessert Hangout for an easy, no-pressure gathering that feels more like inviting friends over to relax than actually “hosting”. You can set up a small table outside, on a patio, or even just near a sunny window, and keep it really simple by setting out the Black Cherry Jell-O parfaits already portioned in cups with a pitcher of iced tea lemonade or, smooth southern sweet tea. You could also add another easy no-bake treat like creamy strawberry angel food cake, or if you prefer something baked, these sweet tart cranberry lemon bars make a lovely addition.

This kind of gathering really reflects the spirit of Romans 12:13: “Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” in a simple, lived-out way. You’re not trying to impress anyone. You’re just opening your space, making room for others, and creating an environment where people can feel at ease and cared for, which is often what they need most.
