Chicken Broccoli Alfredo Casserole With Creamy Cheese Sauce

Chicken Broccoli Alfredo Casserole is a creamy, hearty baked dinner made with tender chicken breast, broccoli florets, and rich Alfredo sauce. My husband is a broccoli guy, so I wanted a casserole that was easy to pull together but still felt like a meat-packed, yet veggie-forward dinner. This chicken broccoli Alfredo casserole did the trick so well he asked me to pack up the leftovers for his work lunches, and that’s how I know it’s a keeper.

Some nights I just want to slide a hot pan onto the table and call it done, and this is the one I reach for. You get tender chicken tucked into a creamy Alfredo sauce, broccoli chopped small enough to sneak into every bite, and Swiss cheese melted right in so the whole casserole stays thick and smooth. A little sour cream keeps it rich without feeling too heavy, and when it comes out bubbling with those golden edges, it feels like a complete meal without any fuss.

Cooking for six kids plus my husband means I don’t make small dinners. This casserole dinner keeps everyone satisfied, which is why it stayed in regular rotation at our table for years. I also like that I can use whatever cooked chicken I already have on hand, whether it’s leftover from earlier in the week or pulled from a Costco rotisserie chicken. It is easy to serve and if we’re lucky enough to have leftovers, they warm up just as creamy the next day, which makes lunch simple.

Key Ingredients

A tray with bowls of shredded chicken, broccoli florets, shredded cheese, cream cheese, grated parmesan, a jar of Alfredo sauce, half an onion, garlic, spices, and a block of cheese arranged neatly.

Here’s a quick overview of the key ingredients for this recipe. For the full list of ingredients and exact measurements, jump to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

  • Chicken Breast:  Use cooked chicken breast, diced into even, bite-sized pieces, so it distributes well throughout the casserole. Leftover roasted chicken or rotisserie chicken both work well, or you can prepare a tender Crockpot whole chicken or make shredded chicken in an Instant Pot ahead of time and keep it on hand for recipes like this.
  • Broccoli Florets: Cut into bite-sized pieces so they cook evenly and blend into each scoop. Drain well after microwaving so extra moisture doesn’t thin the sauce.
  • Alfredo Sauce: Use a good-quality jarred Alfredo sauce. If the sauce is very thick, stirring it well before adding helps it blend smoothly with the sour cream.
  • Sour Cream: Use full-fat sour cream for the smoothest texture. Stir it before adding so there are no cold lumps going into the sauce.
  • Swiss Cheese:  I recommend buying a block and grating it yourself, if you can, for the smoothest melt. Pre-shredded cheese can sometimes melt less evenly.
  • Parmesan Cheese: Freshly grated Parmesan melts and browns better than shelf-stable varieties. Avoid the powdered kind for this recipe.

Smart Substitutions

Frozen broccoli can be used instead of fresh, just thaw it first and drain it well. If Swiss isn’t your favorite, mozzarella melts smoothly and creates a slightly different flavor profile. You can also use homemade Alfredo sauce instead of a jarred kind, if that’s what you prefer.

How To Make Chicken Broccoli Alfredo Casserole

This comes together in one skillet and one baking dish. Build the sauce first, stir everything together, then bake until hot and bubbling.

Heat the olive oil in a large 12-inch cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the diced onion and cook until transparent and soft, about 2 to 3 minutes, then add the minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute.

Tip: Let the casserole rest for about 5 to 10 minutes before serving so it sets slightly and scoops neatly. For a similar family-friendly meal, check out my other one-skillet creamy chicken and biscuit casserole.

Variations and Recipe Tips

If I want the top a little more golden, I’ll switch the oven to broil for a minute or two at the end and keep an eye on it.

Sometimes I add a little extra black pepper right before baking if I want a slightly stronger finish.

If your Alfredo sauce is extra thick, a small splash of milk stirred in before simmering can loosen it slightly without changing the flavor.

This casserole freezes well before baking, which makes it easy to prep ahead.

When reheating leftovers, cover the dish and warm gently so the sauce stays smooth.

How You Can Practice Hospitality With Chicken Broccoli Alfredo Casserole

Invite a newer couple from church or a family you’ve been meaning to get to know for dinner, but instead of eating inside, set the table out in the backyard to enjoy the evening air. Hang a few string lights, light some lanterns, and place the casserole in the center. You might add simple sides like a loaf of cheesy zucchini bread with rosemary or a simple spinach arugula salad with maple dressing, and maybe a large pitcher of refreshing iced tea lemonade to share.

Psalm 19 says the heavens declare the glory of God. Later in the evening, you could invite everyone to take a few quiet minutes to look up at the stars and reflect on how spending time in creation reminds us of both His power and His personal care. Before they leave, say a short prayer for their family, thank God for His creation and the time together, and send them home with leftovers if there are any, so tomorrow’s lunch feels like a small extension of tonight’s care.
