Discover the joy of Christmas with this delicious chocolate covered strawberries recipe! These treats are perfect for sharing to add some holiday cheer.
Line a baking sheet with wax paper or parchment paper. Wash the strawberries and dry them thoroughly with paper towels. Make sure they are completely dry to prevent the chocolate from seizing.
1 lb fresh strawberries
Melt the Chocolates:
Place the semi-sweet chocolate chips in one heat-proof bowl and the white chocolate chips in another.
8 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips, 8 oz white chocolate chips
Add 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil to each bowl and stir to combine.
2 tsp vegetable oil or shortening
Microwave each bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each session, until the chocolates are melted and smooth (about 60-90 seconds total).
Dip the Strawberries:
Insert a wooden skewer or hold the strawberry by the stem. Dip each strawberry into either the melted semi-sweet or white chocolate, coating it completely.
Let excess chocolate drip off, then place the strawberries on the prepared baking sheet.
If you want to add sprinkles, do so immediately before the chocolate sets.
2 tbsp holiday sprinkles
Decorate with Candy Melts:
Melt the red and green candy melts in separate heat-safe bowls using the same method (30-second intervals, stirring between each until smooth).
4 oz green candy melts, 4 oz red candy melts
Transfer the melted candy into pastry bags or small plastic bags with the corner snipped off. Alternatively, use a fork to drizzle the melted candy over the strawberries in a decorative pattern.
Sprinkle more holiday decorations if desired.
Set and Serve:
Allow the chocolate to set completely at room temperature. If not serving right away, refrigerate the strawberries in an airtight container. These are best enjoyed within 24 hours for optimal freshness.
Notes
Helpful Tips for Success:
Be Sure the Berries Are Dry: Chocolate won’t stick to wet strawberries. After washing, pat them dry thoroughly with paper towels. Then, let them air dry completely on a dry towel to ensure there’s no moisture left.
Handle Melted Chocolate Carefully: Remember, melted chocolate and candy melts can get very hot. Use oven mitts or a thick towel if you need to handle hot bowls, and be cautious when stirring to avoid burns.
Timing is Key with Sprinkles: If you’re decorating with sprinkles, add them immediately after dipping the strawberries while the chocolate is still wet. Once the chocolate sets, the sprinkles won’t adhere.
Adding Candy Decorations: If you’re using extra candy decorations, let the chocolate coating on the strawberries harden first, so they’ll stick better when you add them.Christmas Lights Design: Use leftover melted semi-sweet chocolate to draw a "string of lights" on your strawberries. Pipe a loopy string from top to bottom, then add small blobs of melted red and green candy for the “lights.” For a fun twist, larger colorful sprinkles can also be used as lights.Christmas Tree Design: Pipe a triangle shape, starting with a short line at the top and gradually making longer lines as you move down the strawberry to form a tree shape. Immediately sprinkle with nonpareils to create ornaments and top with a yellow star sprinkle.Striped Strawberries: Dip a fork into red or green candy melts and drizzle over the chocolate-covered strawberries in a squiggly pattern. Do this one color at a time. Alternatively, use piping bags to make neat horizontal stripes across the strawberries.
Storage Tips: These strawberries are best when eaten fresh, within 24 hours. Keep them refrigerated in an airtight container until you’re ready to serve. To avoid moisture build-up, place a paper towel at the bottom of the container.
