Ingredients Needed

To make this Chocolate Covered Strawberries Recipe, you only need these few simple ingredients.

  • Strawberries: For this recipe to taste refreshingly sweet, you’ll want fresh strawberries that look bright red and glossy with fresh green leaves. The fruit should feel firm to the touch and smell fragrant. Also, choose medium- to large-sized strawberries to hold the chocolate better when dipped.
  • Chocolate chips: Choose high-quality brown and white chocolate brands to melt smoothly and achieve a richer taste. Look for brands that are labeled “premium, as they use real cocoa butter without stabilizers or any artificial flavorings. If you want a little less sweetness, opt for semi-sweet chocolate.
  • Holiday sprinkles: You’ll want sprinkles in various colors, shapes, and sizes to make the decorations of the chocolate covered strawberries merrier and more festive. Look for the classic colors of Christmas like green and shapes such as tiny Christmas trees or stars. Choose high-quality brands that stay in shape on top of warm chocolate.
  • Candy melts: These candies come in different colors, so you may choose red and green to make the treats Christmas-inspired. They’re available in chips and wafer forms. If it’s your first time doing this recipe, try the wafers to melt more evenly.

Gina’s Tips For Recipe Success

  • Dry the strawberries fully. After washing the strawberries, dry them with paper towels and allow them to sit to fully air dry before dipping them into the chocolate, or else the chocolate won’t stick properly.
  • Dip and drizzle carefully! Melted chocolate and candy melts can burn you when too warm.
  • One or two dips is enough to cover the strawberries nicely. Never swirl to prevent air bubbles.
  • Add the sprinkles while the chocolate is still wet and the candy drizzle decoration fter the chocolate covering has hardened.
  • Line the baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.

Variation Ideas

  • Try layering the strawberry with dark chocolate and white chocolate for a dual-color visual appeal. For a marble effect, drizzle the melted white and milk chocolate over each other.
  • Experiment with different toppings. Try crushed nuts like chopped almonds and pistachios. Use some edible glitters to add a luxurious touch.
  • Instead of Christmas, you can try other fun themes like adding tiny edible heart decorations for Valentine’s Day and flowers for Mother’s Day.
  • Add additional flavors like orange zest, peppermint oil, and spices like cinnamon to elevate the flavor of your chocolate coating. When adding flavors to melted chocolate, it’s essential to use extracts, oils, or dry ingredients that won’t cause the chocolate to seize or alter its texture.
  • Substitute candy melts with a more luxurious pre-made decorator’s icing or tinted royal icing.

Serving Suggestions

You can serve your chocolate strawberries in many fun ways. Here’s how.

  • Serve your dipped strawberries in an elegant tray or on a fruit and chocolate board with other fresh fruits and nuts.
  • For large gatherings, serve your strawberries in small cups or cupcake liners for an easy grab.
  • When you want to give them as a gift, put a wooden stick on each chocolate strawberry and arrange them like a bouquet in a jar or vase.
  • These treats taste even more heavenly with champagne and sparkling wine.

Storing Leftovers

The best time to eat your chocolate covered strawberries is immediately after the chocolate has set when the fruit is at its freshest. However, if you’re planning to make a large batch ahead of time or are left with many leftovers, here’s what you can do.

Refrigeration: Store the treats at room temperature for up to 12 hours. If longer than 12 hours I suggest you refrigerate them. Arrange the strawberries in a single layer on a tray lined with wax paper or parchment paper. Cover loosely with plastic wrap. The strawberris should last up to 1-2 days if refrigerated.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh strawberries, stems attached
  • 8 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 8 oz white chocolate chips
  • 2 tsp vegetable oil or shortening, divided
  • 2 tbsp holiday sprinkles
  • 4 oz green candy melts, or green frosting
  • 4 oz red candy melts, or red frosting

Instructions

Prep the Strawberries:

  • Line a baking sheet with wax paper or parchment paper. Wash the strawberries and dry them thoroughly with paper towels. Make sure they are completely dry to prevent the chocolate from seizing.
    1 lb fresh strawberries

Melt the Chocolates:

  • Place the semi-sweet chocolate chips in one heat-proof bowl and the white chocolate chips in another.
8 oz semi-sweet chocolate chips, 8 oz white chocolate chips
  • Add 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil to each bowl and stir to combine.
2 tsp vegetable oil or shortening
  • Microwave each bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring well between each session, until the chocolates are melted and smooth (about 60-90 seconds total).

Dip the Strawberries:

  • Insert a wooden skewer or hold the strawberry by the stem. Dip each strawberry into either the melted semi-sweet or white chocolate, coating it completely.
  • Let excess chocolate drip off, then place the strawberries on the prepared baking sheet.
  • If you want to add sprinkles, do so immediately before the chocolate sets.
    2 tbsp holiday sprinkles

Decorate with Candy Melts:

  • Melt the red and green candy melts in separate heat-safe bowls using the same method (30-second intervals, stirring between each until smooth).
4 oz green candy melts, 4 oz red candy melts
  • Transfer the melted candy into pastry bags or small plastic bags with the corner snipped off. Alternatively, use a fork to drizzle the melted candy over the strawberries in a decorative pattern.
  • Sprinkle more holiday decorations if desired.

Set and Serve:

  • Allow the chocolate to set completely at room temperature. If not serving right away, refrigerate the strawberries in an airtight container. These are best enjoyed within 24 hours for optimal freshness.

Notes

Helpful Tips for Success:

  1. Be Sure the Berries Are Dry: Chocolate won’t stick to wet strawberries. After washing, pat them dry thoroughly with paper towels. Then, let them air dry completely on a dry towel to ensure there’s no moisture left.
  2. Handle Melted Chocolate Carefully: Remember, melted chocolate and candy melts can get very hot. Use oven mitts or a thick towel if you need to handle hot bowls, and be cautious when stirring to avoid burns.
  3. Timing is Key with Sprinkles: If you’re decorating with sprinkles, add them immediately after dipping the strawberries while the chocolate is still wet. Once the chocolate sets, the sprinkles won’t adhere.
  4. Adding Candy Decorations: If you’re using extra candy decorations, let the chocolate coating on the strawberries harden first, so they’ll stick better when you add them. Christmas Lights Design: Use leftover melted semi-sweet chocolate to draw a “string of lights” on your strawberries. Pipe a loopy string from top to bottom, then add small blobs of melted red and green candy for the “lights.” For a fun twist, larger colorful sprinkles can also be used as lights.
Christmas Tree Design: Pipe a triangle shape, starting with a short line at the top and gradually making longer lines as you move down the strawberry to form a tree shape. Immediately sprinkle with nonpareils to create ornaments and top with a yellow star sprinkle.
Striped Strawberries: Dip a fork into red or green candy melts and drizzle over the chocolate-covered strawberries in a squiggly pattern. Do this one color at a time. Alternatively, use piping bags to make neat horizontal stripes across the strawberries.
  5. Storage Tips: These strawberries are best when eaten fresh, within 24 hours. Keep them refrigerated in an airtight container until you’re ready to serve. To avoid moisture build-up, place a paper towel at the bottom of the container.
