BBQ Spice Rub Recipe

We were busy clearing some land, and I had a big group of teenage boys pitching in to help. I had planned to grill pork chops for them as a thank-you, but realized I was out of our favorite store-bought rub. Instead of panicking, I grabbed my spices and created this BBQ Spice Rub recipe, and let me tell you, it became a family favorite spice rub.

  • Easy to Prepare: Just measure, shake, and store.
  • Great for Entertaining: Ideal for seasoning ribs, chicken, pork, or veggies like this Grilled Corn In Husk.
  • Flavor-Packed: A perfect balance of sweet, smoky, and spicy. If you’d like to experiment with new flavor blends, try this Best BBQ Coffee Dry Rub Recipe.

  • Make-Ahead Friendly: Mix a big batch to have on hand for last-minute backyard BBQs.
  • Customizable: Adjust the heat or sweetness to suit your taste.

Ingredients You Will Need

Here’s a quick overview of the key ingredients for this recipe. For the full list of ingredients and exact measurements, be sure to check the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

ingredients in small bowls for a great authentic texas bbq rub
  • Kosher salt and coarse black pepper: These two form the bold, savory backbone of the rub, enhancing flavor and texture while helping build a satisfying crust.
  • Smoked paprika, chili powder, and cayenne pepper: Deliver smoky, earthy depth with an adjustable level of heat for that extra kick.
  • Cumin and coriander: Bring warm, nutty undertones and a subtle citrus lift, rounding out the spice profile.
  • Garlic and onion powder: Add savory balance and depth without overpowering the meat’s natural taste.
Why should I use Kosher salt when making a dry rub?

Kosher salt is the top choice for dry rubs due to its coarse texture, facilitating easy handling and adhesion to meat. Known for drawing out moisture, kosher salt aids in creating a flavorful crust during cooking, enhancing overall juiciness. Importantly, its additive-free composition preserves the pure flavors of spices and herbs, letting them shine through without interference.

Why do you add so much salt to BBQ rub?

When preparing a BBQ rub, adding a generous amount of salt is not only about adding saltiness to the dish but also about creating a perfect blend of flavors. The coarse texture of salt creates a crust on the meat that everyone loves while balancing the sweetness and heat levels that give the dish a unique taste, Texas BBQ flavor. The result is a delicious and savory meat that is tender and irresistibly delicious.

Storage Instructions

Storage: Keep your spice rub in a sealed jar in a cool, dry pantry. I prefer to store my dry rubs in a glass jar with a tight-fitting plastic lid and a rubber-sealed lid fitted inside, like in the picture above.

In the South, humidity is a challenge, and this method has been the best I have found for keeping dry rubs fresh. However, if you have a favorite airtight container, that will also work for this dry rub recipe. The key is to keep the moisture out for best results.

Shelf Life: Best used within 6 months for maximum flavor.

Make-Ahead: This rub is ideal to prep in bulk and store for whenever the grilling mood strikes.

Biblical Hospitality Reflection

There’s something deeply satisfying about preparing a meal with your own hands—from mixing spices to seasoning a dish with love. A homemade BBQ spice rub like this one isn’t just a shortcut to flavor. It’s an invitation. It invites others to slow down, savor, and feel welcomed at your table.

In the Gospels, we often see Jesus sharing meals, not only to nourish the body but to reach the heart. Meals were moments of ministry, connection, and love. Luke 10:27 reminds us of the foundation of such hospitality: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Making a spice rub might seem ordinary, but when it seasons a meal shared in love, it reflects the extraordinary grace of God. It’s not about impressing, but blessing. Whether it’s pork chops for hungry teens or grilled veggies for neighbors, this simple blend becomes a sacred act of welcome.

Hostessing Tips for Backyard BBQ Gatherings

  • Hospitality as Ministry: View your BBQ not just as a meal, but as a ministry, an opportunity to nourish both body and spirit.
  • Setting a Welcoming Atmosphere: String some lights, play uplifting music, and have seating that invites lingering conversations.
  • Fellowship Over Perfection: Don’t stress about the menu or weather. The true gift is time spent together.
  • Prep-Ahead Tip: Mix the rub days in advance and keep a labeled jar on hand for easy, flavorful meals anytime.
