Why Christmas Cake Mix Cookies Will Become A Tradition

  • Cake Mix Base: This easy Christmas cookie recipe is better known as cake mix cookies. The basic dough is made with a yellow cake mix.
  • Customizable: The Christmas cookie dough is easy to change up the flavor add-ins. You could add simple chocolate chips or any holiday season M&Ms to pieces of peppermint candy canes.

Only 4 Ingredients Needed

Four ingredients, yes only four to make these cake mix cookies with a Duncan Hines box of yellow cake mix. You can keep the 4 simple ingredients on hand, then when last-minute guests pop in, or you forget to make a gift you will be the star with warm cookies coming out of the oven.

coconut oil butter flavor, cake mix, 2 eggs, M&Ms
  • One box of yellow cake mix: This is not brand specific just use your favorite.
  • Eggs: When baking with eggs in the recipe it is best to allow them to come to room temperature on the counter before mixing in.
  • Coconut oil: I like to use butter-flavored coconut oil. Be sure the oil is melted to liquid form. You could also use vegetable oil if you prefer.
  • M&Ms: Let your imagination go. There is a variety of flavored M&Ms on the market during Christmas. This recipe calls for plain milk chocolate M&Ms but don’t feel limited to just these.

One thing nice about making this recipe it only requires one bowl, spoon, and a baking sheet. Clean-up is easy.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and set it aside.

  1. Break room-temperature eggs into a large bowl and whisk them together for about 30 seconds.
  2. Add cake mix and butter-flavored coconut oil to the eggs.

Pro Tip: Using Eggs In Baking

Whole eggs and egg whites whip up to a much greater volume when at room temperature. If you want your baked goods lighter and fluffier be sure to set your eggs out an hour before baking.

  1. Stir until the dough is mixed together well.
  2. Add M&Ms

Pro Tip: Adding Mix-Ins

Don’t over-stir after adding M&Ms. If you do, the color of the M&Ms comes off into the dough some. Just quickly fold them in, scoop and bake.

  1. Stir in the M&Ms. The best way to do this is with a large spoon, folding them in gently so they do not break apart.
  1. Using a cookie scoop, make even-sized dough balls and place them on the parchment cookie sheet.
  1. Bake cookies at 350 degrees for 12- 15 minutes. You want them to be slightly light brown.
  2. Remove them from the oven, wait one minute and then move them to a cooling rack.

Pro Tip: How To Make Non-Dairy Buttery-Flavored Cookies

If you want a non-dairy option, yet not sacrifice a buttery flavor, I have found using Nutiva Coconut Oil with Non-Dairy Butter Flavor is the perfect buttery oil when baking.

  • Mint M&Ms
  • chocolate chips
  • butterscotch chips
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Andies mint pieces
  • Brownie bite M&Ms
  • Mix in 1/2 cup coconut and macadamia nuts

This easy Christmas cookie recipe with few ingredients will be great to take to a Christmas party or cookie exchange. Here is how:

  1. Start with a large tray that has a slight edge. This will help the cookies stay in place when moving the tray.
  2. Be sure your cookies are room temperature before you place them on the tray.
  3. Try to get a variety of cookies when deciding what to put on the tray. Add some nutty cookies like Pistachio Cranberry Cookies or Vegan Peanut Butter Cookies. Be sure to put some old-fashioned holiday favorites like Blackstrap Molasses Cookies.
  4. Type out a card to set by the tray with the name of each type of cookie and a short description. Be prepared, people will want their favorite recipes.
