    What is seasoned salt?

Seasoned salt, also called Seasoning Salt, typically includes fine ground salt, garlic, and onion powder as well as paprika and pepper. Additional ingredients can also be added to create a more complex flavor profile.

    Why make your own?

When you make your own homemade seasoned salt, you know exactly what ingredients are in it. No hidden MSG, and you can alter the level of salt according to your tastes and dietary needs.

It's also very economical to blend your own seasoned salt and you have the ability to create a flavor bet to your liking

What are the best seasoning salts?

There really is no best season salt, but what flavor profile is your favorite. Also, it is important to choose an all-natural, no additives, and no MSG seasoning salt.

    Ingredients

There are endless combinations for seasoning salt recipes but there seems to be a common thread of basic ingredients.

    • Salt – You can use more or less depending on how salty you’d like the flavors to be.
    • Paprika – Regular, smoked, or sweet, each will give you a unique flavor.
    • Black pepper – Be sure and grind fresh, either black, red, pink, or white peppercorns will do.
    • Garlic powder
    • Celery salt
    • Onion powder
    • Chili powder – Mild or a little heat, whichever you prefer.

    What to put it on?

You can use homemade seasoned salt blend anywhere you’d usually use salt and pepper. It adds a great depth of flavor to any savory dish that needs a little punch of flavor. You can sprinkle over french fries, on popcorn, veggies, or on chicken, fish, steak; you name it. It's a versatile seasoning.

    How to make

Making your own seasoning salt is quick and easy. Just gather your seasoning spices and salt. Mix in a bowl with a small whisk. You could also use a small spice grinder to create a finer seasoning salt.

    Tips for salt substitutes

If you are on a salt-restricted diet you can still create your own seasoning blend. Omit the salt in this recipe and add in  1 teaspoon each of dried basil, oregano, marjoram, and thyme. Blend all ingredients together in an herb grinder and pulse for 30 seconds.

I have a coffee grinder that I only used for grinding spices. Place the seeds and pods in the grinder. Pulse for about 30 seconds, then give it a 30 long grind until you can no longer hear pieces spinning around in the grinder.

I took a black permanent marker and wrote spices only on it, so the family doesn’t use it for coffee beans. They might get a surprise hint of spice in their coffee if they did.

    How to make it spicy

The recipe does not contain any spicy ingredients but, if you like heat add 1 or 2 teaspoons of cayenne pepper to the recipe.

    How to store seasonings

I store my spices in glass see-through jars with airtight lids. I also label my jars so I can easily see what is in the jar.
