Whenever I am planning a special dinner, girls’ night, or cozy Valentine’s date at home, this vodka cranberry cocktail is one of my favorite ways to say, “I’m glad you are here.” It looks like a little love potion in a glass, but it is incredibly simple to make.
You can dress it up with a pink sugar rim and dried rose petals for Valentine’s Day or serve it in a highball glass with lime wedges as a holiday vodka cranberry cocktail at Christmas or New Year’s.
Vodka Cranberry Cocktail
This vodka cranberry with lime cocktail feels fancy but comes together with simple ingredients. It starts with a warm cinnamon and ginger infused simple syrup that gives every sip a little whisper of spice. Then you mix it with tart cranberry juice, bright lime juice, bubbly ginger ale, and a good splash of vodka for a romantic cocktail that feels both playful and grown up. This drink is also so flexible for hosting. You can make the simple syrup ahead, set out the pink sugar rim and garnishes, and mix individual drinks to order. Looking for more inspiration? Ingredient Notes
Here’s a quick overview of the key ingredients for this recipe. For the full list of ingredients and exact measurements, be sure to check the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Sugar: Granulated white sugar sweetens the syrup and helps it thicken slightly as it cools. You can use organic cane sugar if that is what you keep on hand.
- Cinnamon sticks: Whole cinnamon sticks infuse a warm, cozy spice into the syrup. Ground cinnamon will not strain as cleanly, so sticks really work best here.
- Fresh ginger: Fresh ginger slices add gentle heat and a little tingle at the back of each sip. Peel the ginger first so the flavor stays clean.
- White sugar: A separate portion of sugar is used to create the pink sugar rim. This is what makes the glass look so festive and “Valentine-ready.”
- Red food coloring: Just a few drops tint the sugar a pretty pink. Liquid food coloring works best because it shakes through the sugar evenly.
- Lime wedge: You will use a wedge of lime to wet the rim of the glass so the pink sugar will stick. Save extra wedges for garnishing your cocktails.
- Cranberry juice: Look for a good-quality cranberry juice. I like an unsweetened or “no sugar added” style since the spiced syrup and ginger ale add sweetness. If you prefer a sweeter drink, you can use a cranberry juice cocktail instead.
- Lime juice: Fresh-squeezed lime juice brightens the cocktail and keeps it from being too sweet. Bottled lime juice will work in a pinch, but fresh really makes a difference here.
- Vodka: Use your favorite unflavored vodka. A smooth, mid-range bottle works beautifully and lets the cranberry and spice shine through.
- Ginger ale: Ginger ale adds bubbles and lightness along with a hint of ginger flavor. You can use diet ginger ale if you want to trim a few calories, or swap in lemon-lime soda for a slightly different twist.
How To Make Vodka Cranberry Cocktail
Make Spiced Simple Syrup
Add water and the sugar to a small saucepan and cook over medium-high heat, stirring, until the sugar dissolves.
Remove from the heat, add the cinnamon sticks and ginger, and let steep for about 30 minutes. Strain out the spices and cool the syrup completely.

Build Your Drink
Add the white sugar and a few drops of red food coloring to a zip-top bag. Seal and shake until the sugar is evenly tinted, then pour it onto a shallow plate. Add more coloring if you want a deeper pink or red.
Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass, then dip the rim into the colored sugar and twist gently to coat. Set the glass aside so the sugar can set while you mix the drink.
Pro Tip: A glass that has been chilled in the freezer looks frosty and keeps your vodka cranberry with lime cold longer.
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the cranberry juice, cooled spiced simple syrup, lime juice, and vodka. Shake until the shaker feels very cold, then strain the mixture into your sugar-rimmed glass.
Pro Tip: No shaker? Use a canning jar with a tight-fitting lid and shake well.
Top the drink with ginger ale and give it a gentle stir without splashing the rim. Garnish with a lime wedge, cranberries, or dried rose petals if you want to lean into the love potion theme. Serve right away while the bubbles are fresh and lively.
Pro Tip: For a party, shake or stir a larger batch of the base and keep it chilled, then pour into glasses and top with ginger ale as guests arrive.

Yes. Skip the vodka and use extra cranberry juice and ginger ale. You will still get the warm spice from the cinnamon ginger syrup, the pink color, and the fun sugar rim, so it feels special for non-drinkers.
Variations, Substitutions, and Recipe Tips
Dietary Modifications: Use diet ginger ale and a lighter cranberry juice if you want to cut sugar. You can also use a little less spiced simple syrup and add a splash of extra lime juice for brightness.
Flavor Enhancements: For a softer, more citrusy flavor, add a small splash of orange juice to the shaker. If you love a little heat, add an extra slice or two of fresh ginger to the glass for a gentle, spicy kick.
Add-In Options: Garnish with fresh raspberries or sliced strawberries, or tuck in a small rosemary or mint sprig.
Simple Substitutions: Use lemon-lime soda instead of ginger ale if that is what you have. If cranberry juice tastes too tart, use cranberry juice cocktail, and if needed, bottled lime juice can stand in for fresh.
Tips For Recipe Success: Let the spiced simple syrup steep for the full 30 minutes. Cool it completely before you build your cocktail, or the ice will melt too quickly and water it down. Rim and fill each glass right before serving so the pink sugar stays crisp and the ginger ale stays bubbly. Gina’s Notes and Tips
- Room Temperature: The cocktail is best enjoyed right after you make it while it is cold and bubbly. If it sits out and goes flat, it is better to mix a fresh drink.
- Fridge: You can make the cinnamon ginger simple syrup several days ahead, or chill a mixed base of cranberry juice, spiced simple syrup, lime juice, and vodka for a few hours, then pour into glasses and top with cold ginger ale when serving.
- Freezer: Do not freeze the finished cocktail. Instead, chill your glasses and vodka in the freezer so the drink stays extra cold when you mix it.
