French onion dip was always on the menu for big family gatherings when I was a kid. Seyfert’s ridged potato chips and a tub of chip dip, life was good! Today I still enjoy the combination of chips and French onion dip however, it’s also great scooped up with my homemade mustard pretzels.
Easy To Make French Onion Dip Recipe
When you make your own dip from scratch, you can skip adding any extra preservatives found in the classic French onion soup mix envelope dip recipe. I like making this savory dip to go with chips and veggies and as a topping for my crispy skinned baked potatoes.

Dip Recipe Ingredients
Making homemade French onion dip is easy with a few simple ingredients. When added to a pint of sour cream, you have a creamy-textured dip in minutes.
- Beef base bouillon: I used Better Than Bouillion beef base for this recipe. You can find it at your local grocery store. Once opened, it needs to be kept in the refrigerator. I highly recommend keeping the bouillon on hand. I regularly use it for soups, sauces, and dips.
- Soy sauce: Any brand of soy sauce will work for this recipe.
- Parsley: I suggest using only dried parsley for this recipe. Fresh would be a little too strong in flavor.
- Dried minced onion: Dehydrated onions provide a milder flavor and also help thicken the texture and consistency of the dip without overpowering it with the strong taste of fresh onions.
- Corn starch: A little cornstarch will help thicken your dip and make it easy to scoop on chips.
- Onion powder: Although the recipe uses dried onion pieces, a little onion powder helps bring out the onion flavor throughout the creamy sour cream.

Instructions For Making Dip
- In a small bowl, whisk together the bouillon paste, soy sauce, and sour cream until smooth and creamy.
- Add the parsley, onion powder, paprika, garlic powder, sugar, pepper, and cornstarch.
- Whisk until creamy and smooth. Don’t worry if it seems too runny. It will thicken up after the next step.
- Once the dip ingredents are combined you will need to transfer the dip to an airtight container and refrigerate for at least one hour before serving. This allow the flavors to meld and the dip to thicken. Be sure to give it a good stir before serving.
Tip: Don’t skip chilling this French onion dip recipe in the fridge after you make it. The dried onions need time to soak in the liquids so they expand and soften. This will also help thicken your dip.
Storage
Kee the dip in a container with a tight fitting lid in your refrigeraor. The dip will remain fresh in the refrigerator for up to a week, provided the sour cream used has a long expiration date.
Variations
This is a great basic French onion dip recipe. However, you can customize it to make it your own.
- A tablespoon of diced green onions or fresh chives is nice to sprinkle on top when serving.
- Use 16 oz of soft cream cheese instead of sour cream for a thick, creamy spread.
- You could also opt for low-fat sour cream or plain Greek yogurt.
Party Dip
If you are serving this chip dip for a game-day party or summer picnic, I suggest making a double batch. Here is how you can easily double or triple the recipe.
