Before You Get Started
Ingredient Prep Tips
Drain and rinse your canned chickpeas well.
Pat dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture. This is the key to ensuring crispiness.
Common Mistakes & Fixes
Skipping the mid-cook shake: Shaking halfway through ensures all sides get crispy.
Not drying the chickpeas enough: This results in a soft texture. Pat them very dry for crunch.
Overcrowding the air fryer: Spread in a single layer for even crisping.
Ingredient Tips For Roasted Chickpeas Air Fryer Style
Here’s a quick overview of the key ingredients for this recipe. For the full list of ingredients and exact measurements, be sure to check the recipe card at the bottom of this post.

- Chickpeas (canned): Use one cup of canned chickpeas that are rinsed and drained thoroughly. If you’re interested in preserving your own, learn how in the Easy Guide For Pressure Canning Chickpeas.
- Olive Oil: Choose extra virgin olive oil for the richest flavor. It helps the seasoning stick and allows the chickpeas to crisp beautifully in the air fryer.
- Cumin: Use ground cumin for a warm, earthy flavor.
- Onion and Garlic Powder: Use plain onion and garlic powder, not onion or garlic salt.
- Paprika: Smoked paprika adds a warm, smoky flavor. It’s essential for that beautiful color and extra depth in flavor.
You can buy chickpeas dried or the canned variety that are precooked. I also have a post that teaches you how to home can your own chickpeas. Canning your own chickpeas yields a softer chickpea because you can control the processing time.

- For fun seasoning twists, try coating your chickpeas in a Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix, Sazon Seasoning, or go bold with a smoky Texas BBQ Rub. For a unique flavor kick, experiment with Thai Spice Seasoning Blend or sweet and savory Maple Dry Rub.
- Use avocado oil instead of olive oil.
- Too soft? Your chickpeas may not be dry enough; be sure to pat thoroughly before cooking.
- Cooking times may vary slightly between air fryers, so adjust the total cooking time as needed. The chickpeas are ready when they are golden brown, dry and crispy on the outside, and soft in the middle.

Storage: Let chickpeas cool completely, then store in an airtight container at room temp for up to 3 days.

Biblical Hospitality Reflection
“Biblical hospitality is not about waiting for the perfect moment. It is about saying yes to the opportunities right in front of us.”
Opening our home doesn’t have to mean preparing a feast or setting a perfect table. It can be as simple as offering a cozy seat and a bowl of warm, seasoned chickpeas. As 1 Peter 4:9 reminds us, “Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.”
If the idea of hosting feels overwhelming, start small. Light a candle, brew a pot of coffee, or set out an easy snack like these crispy chickpeas. It’s not about what you serve. It’s about making space for connection. God uses these simple moments to draw hearts together. Your willingness is the invitation He can work through.
