Creamy Baked Spinach and Artichoke Dip
This recipe has been around for as long as I have been married for over 40 years! In fact, it was one of the first appetizers I served friends as a newlywed.
This warm dip is a classic special occasion appetizer that my adult kids also now enjoy serving when they host friends and family gatherings.
Our favorite way to serve this creamy dip is to hollow out a Hawaiian King round loaf of bread and fill the center with the dip. We then tear the pieces of bread and lay them around the bowl. Perfect for scooping up the dip.
As you can see below, the grandkids enjoyed eating their spinach after I shot the photos for this post.
Ingredients You Will Need To Make This Dip
- Cream Cheese: Be sure to set it on your counter to soften to room temperature.
- Sour Cream: I suggest using a full-fat sour cream for this recipe. It will create a rich, creamy dip.
- Mayonnaise: Be sure you use mayo, not sandwich spread. ( sorry, I grew up in Indiana and didn’t know that mayo was until I moved to GA)
- Garlic: Do not use the type you find prechopped in a jar. For the best flavor, mince fresh cloves.
- Cheese: For a bubbly, hot, melty dip, use very fine shredded parmesan and mozzarella cheese.
- Artichokes: Buy a can of quartered artichoke hearts. Cooking and cutting fresh artichokes is time-consuming.
- Spinach: I suggest using frozen spinach vs fresh for this dip recipe.
Recipe Success Tips
- Be sure to drain the artichoke hearts. Adding the juice would water down your dip.
- The spinach must be thawed. Then, lay it on paper towels and squeeze out the water before adding it to the dip mixture.

How To Serve Dip In A Bread Bowl
When I first got married, it was very popular to serve this dip in a bread bowl and then use the cutout pieces of bread as scoops. My favorite bread to do this with is a round, sweet Hawaiian loaf or crusty whole wheat bread.
1. Cut a circular opening on the top of the loaf, leaving a border around the edge to form the bowl.
2. Carefully remove the bread from the center, leaving the outer shell intact to hold the dip.
3. Cut the removed bread into cubes or slices for dipping.
4. Fill the hollowed-out bread bowl with the Creamy Baked Spinach Artichoke Dip.
5. Serve with the cubed bread or other accompaniments.
